Aeroflot has introduced a new simplified definition of the free baggage allowance on the basis of pieces system on all its routes. The system applies to all traffic, furnished from April 1, 2011.

According to the new system, clients of the airline, depending on ticket class, may bring in certain amount of baggage. In this way passengers of economy class of the “Optium”, “Budget”, and “Promo” groups are entitled to one luggage space in economy class of "Status" group - for two seats, and those who fly business class, are allowed to bring three pieces of luggage for free. A one piece of baggage is one bag weighing up to 23 kilograms and the size of the sum of three measurements up to 158 centimeters. The fee for excess baggage is 50 euros for the second baggage seat weighing up to 23 kg and 150 euros for the next. For transportation within Russia, if the total weight of passenger baggage, including the one that is to be carried in the cabin does not exceed 10 kg, the number of seats is not limited. Rules of transportation of hand luggage remain unchanged.

There are exceptions in some routes. The two seats for free are given to passengers of the economy class in transit between U.S. destinations (except to / from New York /Washington) and the Middle East /Asia (except destinations of the Russian Federation in Asia, and Tashkent, Bishkek) / Africa destinations of India, to / from New York /Washington/ Erevan. Besides, extra seats are given to keepers of Gold, Silver, Elite, Elite plus cards.

Ski equipment (skis, snowboards), surfing (up to 168 cm), golf equipment, bicycles and diving equipment, not exceeding a weight of 23 kg in all classes is considered as one piece of luggage according to the standard. The baggage rules of the airline that is carried out the flight operate on flights that are run by other airlines under the agreement with Aeroflot. In management's opinion undoubted advantages of the new system for passengers - it's simplicity, transparency of pricing for excess baggage, reasonable fees for extra space. Such a system operates in most U.S., Canada, South and Central America airlines, as well as on some flights by European airlines.
